Georgetown, Texas is home to Southwestern University; a small liberal arts college that helps give the town its character and set it apart from the neighboring towns in Central Texas. The university is small, with only 1,300 students, so Georgetown receives all the cultural benefits of having a university in town without the downsides that come with the large crowds at bigger universities.
Georgetown used to be one of the small towns set way out from Austin, but as the Central Texas metropolitan area has grown, it’s considered part of the corridor of cities and small towns that define the region. As such, it’s seen the same growth as much of the region, seeing the population rise from 28,000 in 2000 to over 40,000 residents now. The size coupled with the university makes it perfect for those seeking to live in a small Texas town that isn’t too small. Since it’s less than 10 miles from the rapidly-developing Round Rock and only 25 miles from Austin, it is simple to take trips to either city to take in the myriad entertainments available. Residents of Georgetown often root for the nearby minor league baseball team, the Round Rock Express. Its proximity to Austin and particularly Round Rock make it easy to commute to either city to work, as well.
There’s plenty of fun to be had staying in Georgetown, as well. Theatre buffs will enjoy the vibrant local scene at the Georgetown Palace Theatre, which has a full season of plays in a building that’s been completely restored to capture the feel of its long history. The restoration is part of a larger project run by the Downtown Georgia Association to preserve the beautiful and historical downtown Georgetown. The Association also sponsors First Fridays, a monthly event to showcase the shops and restaurants of downtown Georgetown, complete with parties and live music. Throughout the months of March through December, the Association also sponsors Markets Days on the second Saturday of every month, with outdoor shopping, entertainment and dining to enjoy.
The university provides plenty of points of interest for residents, as well, with a continuing roster of visiting lectures, art exhibits, theatre shows, and musical performances of everything from opera to jazz. If you enjoy supporting the local teams, there are year-round athletic events where you can show up to root for the Southwestern Pirates.
With all the opportunities for affordable educational and community events, it’s unsurprising that Georgetown has a reputation as being a great place for family life. Retirees also flock to the town to take advantage of the plentiful community activities.
